New limits in the call rates and SMS in the EU from this Wednesday

Brussels / From this Wednesday, the citizens of the European Union (EU) will pay a maximum of 19 cents plus VAT for each minute of call to another member country and a maximum of 6 cents plus VAT for each text message, a limit that will reduce the big differences tariffs that existed in the EU so far.

This reduction in the maximum prices is part of the great telecommunications reform which the EU has undertaken and which also led to the elimination of the extra costs known as “roaming” in June 2017.

According to data from the European Commission, a call from one Member State to another from fixed or mobile was up to three times greater than a domestic one, with Member States where the difference between the two was up to ten times greater.

In the case of SMS, the SMS sent from one Member State to another were more than twice as expensive as in the same country.

From Wednesday, the only difference between the maximum prices of calls and intra-European messages will be marked by the different VAT that countries apply to telephony, which varies between 17% and 27% and in Spain is 21%.

Limits and information

The telephone operators must inform the users of the change and apply it by default, that is, without the client having to do anything to benefit from the new limit.

The limits only apply to private consumers and not to companies, nor will they have effect in the event that the client has contracted with his operator a plan that includes a fixed volume of calls and messages within the European Union at a price fixed.

The vice president of the European Commission (EC) for the Digital Single Market, Andrus Ansip, said these limits are “a concrete example” of a measure which makes a difference in people’s daily lives, and considered that the package of the Telecommunications reform “will help meet the connectivity needs of Europeans and boost competitiveness.
