NIGERIA CONFIRMS THE RELEASE OF 91 GIRLS RAPTED BY BOKO HARAM

At least 91 of the 110 girls kidnapped more than a month ago by the Boko Haram jihadists in Dapchi, in northeastern Nigeria, have been freed, Information Minister Lai Mohammed confirmed at a press conference today.

The number of minors released by Nigerian terrorists could continue to rise as the count progresses, according to the Government.

Mohammed confirmed before the press conference that the figure corresponds to “the cases documented so far” and reveals that “the release of the kidnapped students is still ongoing.”

The lack of concreteness around the figure is due to the fact that the terrorists did not hand over the girls to the authorities, but left them in the same city where they were abducted, Dapchi, in the northeastern state of Yobe.

The girls were released around 3:00 local time (2:00 GMT) and, according to the Government, no ransom has been paid for them.

The Ministry of Information also indicated that in order not to endanger the lives of the girls, “the preferred option was a nonviolent strategy”.

Faced with the lack of official information on the health status of the girls, local media suggest that five of them died of asphyxia shortly after their abduction, because the vehicles in which they were moved were too full.

The incident occurred on February 19 and recalls the abduction in 2014 of more than 200 girls also by Boko Haram in the neighboring state of Borno, of which 112 are still in captivity.

Boko Haram, which in local languages means “non-Islamic education is sin”, struggles to impose an Islamic court in Nigeria, a Muslim majority country in the north and predominantly Christian in the south. (March 21, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
