Nobel physics prize to astrophysicists for work on evolution of universe

Copenhagen / Three astrophysicists have been awarded the Nobel prize in physics for their contribution to understanding the evolution of the universe and the place of Earth in the cosmos.

Canadian scientist James Peebles and his Swiss colleagues Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz received the accolade, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm said on Tuesday.

Peebles has been honoured for his theoretical discoveries in physical cosmology, and Mayor and Queloz for their discovery of an exoplanet orbiting a solar-type star.

Peebles is an expert in cosmology, born in 1935 in Winnipeg, Canada, and is attached to Princeton University in the United States.

Mayor, born in 1942, has shared a good part of his research work with his colleague and compatriot Queloz, born in 1966, and both work at the University of Geneva.

The theoretical framework developed over two decades by Peebles is the basis of our modern understanding of the history of the universe, from the Big Bang to the present day, according to the Nobel committee.

Mayor and Queloz, who have explored the Milky Way in search of unknown worlds, were the first to discover a planet outside our Solar System.

In 1995 they identified an exoplanet orbiting the 51 Pegasi star.

All awards include an economic endowment, which this year amounts to nine million Swedish kronor (831,000 euros, 912,000 dollars).

Peebles was awarded half of the nine million Swedish kronor ($912,000) prize with the other half split between Mayor and Queloz.

The physics award came after the Nobel prize for medicine, which on Monday opened the round of announcements of the prestigious awards, with the chemistry, literature, peace and economy categories due to be revealed in the coming days.

There will be two literature prizes this year after last year’s was suspended due to a scandal in the Swedish Academy.

Americans William Kaelin and Gregg Semenza and Briton Peter Ratcliffe received the medicine award for revealing the relationship of cells with oxygen, which has enabled new strategies to combat anemia and cancer.

The awards will be officially presented in Stockholm on 10 December, the anniversary of the death of founder Alfred Nobel. (October 8, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
