North American architect Frank Gehry, Prince of Asturias Award for Arts

Once over, a building must be a work of art as if it was a sculpture. The author if this philosophy is North American architect and one of the ten masters of modern architecture Frank Gehry, the new Prince of Asturias Award for Arts 2014. In Spain, Gehry is the author of the Guggehheim Museum in Bilbao (País Vasco), the building that gave him international fame.

Frank Owen Gehry was born in Toronto (Canada) on February 28, 1929.

He lives in Los Angeles (USA) since the age of 15, so he naturalized as US American.

He studied Architecture in the University of South California, ending in 1954, and studied urban planning in the Harvard School of Design.

In Los Angeles, he started working for the Victor Gruen & co. studio, and in 1961, married and with two daughters, he moved to Paris, where he worked in the André Remonder studio.

In France he studied the work of Le Corbusier and other French and Europeans that were influential in his first works.

He went back to Los Angeles in 1962 and opened his own architecture studio, where he starts to develop his own architectural style.

Gehry is one of the main members of the US deconstruction movement, because of his semi-split shapes.

This architect claims that “once over, a building must be a work of art as if it was a sculpture”.

Frank Gehry has the Pritzker Prize, the Nobel for architecture

The California Aerospace Museum (1982-1984) awarded him in 1989 with the Pritzker Prize, the most important architecture award in the world, similar to Nobel Prize.

Among his works we can find the Museum Cabrillo Marine, the Loyola Law Faculty (California), the Minnesota University Museum (1990-1993), the American Center in Paris (1994), the Nationale Nederlanden Building (1992-1996, Prague), the Vitra Building in Basel (Switzerland), the Prize National Patrimony and the Experience Music Project (1995-2000, Seattle, USA).

The extension of the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, the Jewish Polish History Museum in Warsaw, the recovery of the Meyer Park inn Lisbon, and the “Aquarium of the World”, the the Pacific sector of the Panama Channel, in 2004.

However, the building that gave him international prestige was the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao (1991-1997), where he used glass, steel, zinc or titanium, mixed with other local materials like stone. For this work, Gehry got several awards like the Austrian Friedrich Kiesler (1998) or the International Design Award (1999), given by the North American Society of Lightening Engineering.

Other important works are the Chiat/Day (California); the Art Museum of the University of Toledo (Ohio); the Bard College Scene Art Center (New York, 2003); the Walt Disney Auditorium (Los Angeles, 2003), the Prague Dancing House in the Czech Republic, or the MIT in Boston, USA.

In Spain -where he has been six times candidate of the Prince of Asturias Award for Arts– he did, among other works, the sculpture of the Villa Olímpica, a huge fish some 30 meters long in the Barcelona Hotel Arts gardens (1992), and in 2006 the remodeling of the winery Herederos del Marqués de Riscal in Elciego (Álava).

He also designed the futurist skyscraper dominating the area of Sant Andreu-Sagrera in Barcelona and the Contemporary Art Museum in Paris.

His work has been the center of many mono-graphic studies, like the Sydney Pollack’s documentary “Sketches of Frank Gehry”, presented in 2006, and his popularity has made him appear even in the TV show The Simpsons.

As a designer Gehry made an exclusive jewelry collection for Tiffany and since 1984, year of the creation of the first hand-made design lamp in the shape of a fish, this animal became his inspiration for future sculptures and buildings.
