Notre-Dame cathedral is on fire: firefighters don’t ensure they are able to stop the fire

Paris / The Paris firefighters are not sure that the spread of the flames can be stopped on the roof of Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris and they pointed out that if the fire reaches the towers, the consequences are unpredictable.

The French Secretary of State for the Interior, Laurent Nuñez, present at the scene, said that the monument’s salvation “is not ensured”.

A spokesman for the firefighters, Jean-Claude Gallet, said the priority is now focused on preventing the north tower of the cathedral from collapsing, which could end up with a good part of the building.

The fire was declared after the closing of the monument

In the works of extinction of the fire, which was declared shortly before 19.00 local time (17.00 GMT), after the closure of the monument to the public, 400 firefighters participate and there are 18 water cannons and air and water resources from the nearby Seine River.

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, went to the surroundings Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris to follow the work of the firemen accompanied by the prime minister, Édouard Philippe.

In a first message on his Twitter account, Macron expressed the “emotion of an entire nation” for the fire and indicated that he thought of all Catholics and all French people.

The Prosecutor’s Office opens an investigation into the Notre Dame fire

The Paris Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of the fire which affects much of the roof of the Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris cathedral, a spokesperson told EFE.

The Judicial Police has been in charge of investigating the reasons for the fire, which is still ongoing.

At the time of the fire the cathedral had already closed the tourists, but the authorities evacuated all the perimeter, as well as part of the adjacent houses to avoid being affected by the smoke.

The Vatican receives with “sadness” the “terrible” fire at Notre-Dame cathedral

The Vatican has received with “disbelief and sadness” the news of the “terrible” fire which has devastated today a good part of the roof of the Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris, a “symbol of Christianity in France and in the world”.

The interim spokesman of the Holy See, Alessandro Gisotti, expressed the “closeness” of the Vatican to French Catholics and Parisians and secured prayers for the firefighters and all those who strive to “do everything possible to face this dramatic situation”.
