O CARBALLIÑO (OURENSE) BEATS ITS OWN RECORD WITH A GIANT TAPA OF OCTOPUS

O Carballiño (Ourense / Spain) With the sound of the scissors in the background, the pulpeiras and pulpeiros from Arcos, parish of O Carballiño, have broken their own record for preparing the largest tapa of octopus in the world, a feat done in 10 minutes and 8 seconds, after getting cut 450 kilos of cephalopods.

Although they couldn’t stop the clock in ten minutes, about thirty pulpeiros have managed to chop and season the octopus all over the plate surpassing the record of last year, amid a huge expectation on the part of dozens of people who congregated in front of the municipality of Ourense.

Without rivalry in the cut of the octopus, the president of the Association of Pulpeiros, María Isaura Garcia, has assured the aim of this edition is that all attendees enjoy this ancient trade.

“The goal is to do something extraordinary which only we do in the shortest time possible,” said Garcia, who has said that they no longer have the pressure of having to fight against the clock “since there is no one to beat the record”.

As a reward, attendees can enjoy a tasting of the octopus, a piece of cake and drink “at a small price of five euros.”

A few days after the town of Ourense celebrated the Festa do Pulpo, the mayor in the town, Francisco Fumega, explained that this act is an “important promotion for O Carballiño, for the Festa do Pulpo and, fundamentally, a recognition to that office that have the pulpeiras that take more than four centuries dedicated to this trade”.

The record

According to he assured, it is a record that “doesn’t have any other place either in Spain or in the world”, all this, thanks to a “star product like the octopus”, which although has pointed out that you can eat “in any part of the world, you can not eat octopus like the one that these families make generation after generation. “

And is that one of the best kept secrets by these pulpeiras that show around thirty and forty families, according to Garcia, when she is about to turn 40 years cutting octopus, resides in “a lot of practice.”

From here, the fundamental elements are to have “a good product”, season it well, with salt, sweet and spicy paprika (according to the tastes) and “extra virgin olive oil“.

One of the singularities in the preparation of this dish is in the size of it, -5.35 meters in diameter, a brand that has not yet surpassed another locality, handcrafted, with the mission of covering it with slices of octopus in less time than the previous year, which was 10.58 minutes.

To conclude, we can say that no one is left without trying the cephalopod and that the organization plans to distribute approximately 1,200 octopus rations.
