Opened in Mexico an exhibition in honour of Octavio Paz works by Picasso and Miro

It’s opened today the exhibition “In this to see that:Octavio Paz and Art” which showcases more than 200 works by artists like Picasso and Joan Miro, to whom the 1990 Nobel Prize for Literature winner dedicated some of his texts.

The exhibition is composed of 228 artworks, among them books, first editions and pre-Hispanic pieces, along with paintings, sculpture, graphics, photography and recordings by artists such as Marcel Duchamp, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Frida Kahlo, Francis Bacon, Diego Rivera, Vassily Kandinsky, Edward Hopper and Eduardo Chillida.

The exhibition reveal the affinities and the afflictions of Paz (1914-1998) by many of the artists who he wrote about and those he lived with, such as friends, the painter Juan Soriano and writer André Breton.

The exhibition, that is part of commemorative activities of the birth of the writer, was not opened by Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto. Sources of Conaculta reported EFE the president couldn’t attend due to scheduling problems because he was in Michoacan.

Within his intellectual landscape, Paz dedicated a very special place to the visual arts and was the heir and protagonist of the 20th century avant-gardes which is reflected in the two volumes of “Los privilegios de la vista” (The privileges of the view) that is part of his complete works.

The exhibition integrates two main themes, universal modern art and Mexican art, and although not in chronological order it combines pre-Hispanic art with the Tantric, the European and the Mexican of the 20th century, and American of the second half of the last century, among others.

These two main themes are subdivided into various chapters as “El cubismo y Picasso” (Cubism and Picasso), “La sonrisa de Eros” (The smile of Eros), “Mestizaje y Milagro”, and “Las dos conquistas: la de las armas y las de las almas” (The Two Conquests: the weapons and souls).
