Opposition mayoral candidate wins again in Istanbul

Istanbul/ With almost 98 percent of the ballots tallied by Sunday evening, opposition candidate Ekrem Imamoglu, of the centrist-secular People’s Republican Party (CHP), won re-election as mayor of Istanbul, garnering 53.9 percent of the vote, according to NTV television, a private channel that reportedly has close ties to Turkey’s ruling Islamist Justice and Development Party (AKP).

The 49-year-old Imamoglu’s opponent was former Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, 63, a close associate of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the leader of the AKP.

“I thank those who have worked with me, I hope that the decision the Istanbul electorate has made will be good for the city over the next five years,” Yildirim said, acknowledging defeat during a public appearance and congratulating Imamoglu.

The conservative candidate, the right-hand man of the president, won 45.2 percent of the vote on a day in which voter turnout exceeded 84 percent.

In many ways, Sunday’s election was a referendum on the AKP and Erdogan’s rule in Turkey.

The 65-year-old Erdogan, through his AKP, has led Turkey since 2002, becoming to some in Turkey, the Middle East and the world a transformative leader and a major voice for political Islamism, while others in recent years have criticized his anti-democratic tendencies and virulent economic liberalism.

The AKP had forced a new election in Istanbul, a city with 16 million inhabitants and the economic center of the country, due to alleged irregularities in the initial municipal elections held on March 31, an election that Imamoglu won by only 14,000 votes.

On Sunday, initial figures indicate that Imamoglu prevailed not only in the Western-leaning strongholds of his party – those areas of downtown Istanbul around the districts of Sisli and Kurtulush, as well as the Asian neighborhoods making up the large district of Kadikoy – but even in parts of the city that until now had almost always voted for the AKP.

This clear victory for the opposition candidate is considered across the Turkish political spectrum to be a major defeat for Erdogan and the AKP, and will likely launch Imamoglu to political stardom.

The new mayor may even be tapped to be the CHP’s candidate against the AKP in upcoming elections and could, possibly, run against Erdogan for president in coming years. (June 23, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
