Yingxiu (China) / The town of Yingxiu, where a quarter of its population died in the Wenchuan earthquake, is today a quiet town in southwestern China where each inhabitant has many bad memories that can not be deleted a decade later.
At first glance, Yingxiu, the closest population to the earthquake of the 8-degree earthquake that caused nearly 90,000 dead and missing is a bucolic mountain village, the gateway to the sanctuaries of Wolong panda bears but inside they remain many scars.
Symbols of these are the ruins of the Xuankou Institute, preserved in the center of the city as a memorial of the earthquake, since dozens of children who attended class died in its classrooms when a good part of the building collapsed.
The visitors observe a minute of silence before the remains of the institute, they make three reverences in respect and leave yellow chrysanthemums next to a huge statue of Soviet style that honors the heroes fallen in the earthquake.
The earthquake killed some 2,500 of the 10,000 inhabitants of Yingxiu, and many of their bodies rest in a cemetery near the town, where their names appear, although only the photographs of a dozen of them, who were soldiers of the Army, are shown.
