Jerusalem/ Ahed Tamimi, the Palestinian teenager who slapped Israeli soldiers in a video that was viral, was released after nearly eight months in prison in the face of great media expectancy.
Tamimi offered a very busy press conference in the plaza of her town, Nabi Saleh, in the West Bank, in which she said that she hoped that the campaigns that were carried out in her name “continue for all the other political prisoners, especially the young people.”
Tamimi was arrested on December 19 when she was 16, after a video was broadcast in which she appears along with her mother and cousin, berating and assaulting Israeli soldiers in the courtyard of her house.
It happened during a riot in which one of her cousins, a 14-year-old was shot in the head.
After her release, mother and daughter went to Ramallah, where they visited the tomb of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, and were also received by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who referred to Ahed as “a model of the Palestinian struggle.”
The Tamimi are a well-known family that have been leading the Israeli anti-occupation protests for years, intensified since last December, when the events took place and when the president of the United States, Donald Trump, recognized Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.
