Panama: ‘alias’, ‘nicknames’ and ‘monikers’ of the electoral candidates

Panama / Different aliases, names of animals, diminutives or products and even the devil appear in the picturesque and curious identification list of the more than 4,000 candidates for a position in the general elections next May 5 in Panama published by the Electoral Tribunal (TEA).

At least among the seven presidential candidates, the only one who uses a diminutive in his campaign identification is Laurentino Cortizo, better known as “Nito”, but from there to below the variety given to fill an album.

Among the candidates for the 71 seats in the National Assembly of Deputies is “El Gato”, as the controversial opposition deputy Benicio Robinson is known, who seeks re-election by the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) in the northwestern province of Bocas del Toro.

There is also a “Pastora”, a nationalized woman who runs for deputy by the Molirena party, in alliance with the PRD, in the western province of Chiriquí, or in the same jurisdiction “Cofalito” (a well-known ointment for blows) as identifies the candidate of the leftist Broad Front for Democracy (FAD).

“La Sierva”, “El Chavo”  and other nicknames

And the “Periquito”, Alexander Olmedo who was launched for a deputation for PRD in the province of Panama West, while Raquelita “La Sierva” is signed by another seat in the province of Panama, in a circuit of the populated district of San Miguelito, with half a hundred candidates.

But she will meet with “El amigo fiel” Luis Eduardo Camacho, spokesman of the detained former president Ricardo Martinelli (2009-2014), candidate for the Democratic Change party (CD) allied with the Alianza party.

Also appears “El Chavo”, alias which presents the young Roberto Garcia for a seat in the central province of Veraguas, also of the PRD and in the capital “La Polla” Asilem, a nice young woman without any political experience.

Nicknames of candidates for the City Hall

At the level of mayors the thing is quieter as it stresses “El tanque de gas”, like the mayoral candidate was registered by the opposition PRD, Jose Luis Fabrega, although they also appear disputing the mayor of Capira a “Fosforito”, another “Topo”, a “Lolo”, “Chino Kanutillo” and “DJ Chombito”, from different parties.

Among the thousands of candidates to choose the 679 corregimiento representatives, “A Paro 7 Diablo” with its respective personal identity card as an applicant for FAD in La Pava, Ola district, center of the country.

There is also a “Vikingo”, only identified as such, in a corregimiento of Aguadulce by the Alianza party, while “Bimbo”, like the popular bread of Mexican manufacture, was registered by Antonio Rodriguez for the CD in Cabuya (Cocle).

Aliases of animals, legumes and more

Thus, there are “El Siervo”, “El Nini”, “Pato”, “El Pollo”, “Lobo”, “Lentejita”, “Poroto”, “Tocayo” (only with cedula), “El Pulga”, “Fritura”, “Ñata”, “Fulo”, “Chigua”, “Cheo”, “Flaco”, “Yuri”, “Chola”, “Chicho”, “Chito”, “Chico”, “Chucho”, “Chichin”, “Chinga”,”Chella”, “Chino blanco”.

There are other like “Ñito”, “Popeye”, “Raron”, “Yordi”, “Gringo”, “No te rindas”, “Moro”, “Kinkon”, “Vieja”, “Chinchorro”, “Titi”, “Peloncho”, “Guandú”, “Pilón”,”Pillo”,”El Perro”, “Cosito”, “El León”,”El Banquero”, “El Varón”, “Caballo”, “Coca”, “Coco”, “Mono”, “Perico” and “Loquillo” who fight for a representative position.

According to the TE, candidates decide how to register their candidacy to try to be recognized more easily by their followers as they are better known by their nickname than by their first name, although the authority has all the data.

On May 5, 2.75 million Panamanians will renew the president, their vice president; 71 deputies to the National Assembly, 20 deputies to the Central American Parliament, 81 mayors, 679 corregimiento representatives and 9 councilors with their respective deputies.
