PEDRO SANCHEZ FORMS A PRO-EUROPEAN GOVERNMENT WITH 11 WOMEN AND 6 MEN

The new Government of Spain formed by the socialist Pedro Sanchez, made up of more women than men (eleven against six), is committed to equality, is decidedly pro-European and has the challenge of socially and territorially uniting the country.

Sanchez, who has announced the composition of his Executive this afternoon in a brief appearance at La Moncloa, after communicating it to the King, has also said that his is an “open” government: one third of the ministers are independent.

And he added his Government is “a reflection of the best of the society which aspires to serve”, progressive, modernizing and pro-European; an intergenerational team of respected professionals, open to dialogue and consensus.

The new president thanked the people who make it up to have “left their prestigious professional careers to serve the country and especially those who most need the protection of the public thing.”

The new Executive increases in four the thirteen ministries that had the Government of Mariano Rajoy and, also for the first time, in the designation of the portfolio of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation includes the name of the European Union.

The president has emphasized that his is a government which assumes the “feminist movement” that emerged on March 8 and, in his opinion, marked “a before and after” in Spanish society.

In this way, he stressed that it is a Government “committed to equality” – with the feminist Carmen Calvo as vice president and minister of this area – and that it gives the weight of economic responsibility, also for the first time, to two women.

He pointed out that, in addition to being intergenerational, the trajectory of its members “combines private and public management”.

Along with Carmen Calvo, Josep Borrell, José Luis Ábalos, Nadia Calviño, María Jesús Montero, Meritxell Batet, Carmen Montón and Teresa Ribera, have added the names of astronaut Pedro Duque, as Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities; former Basque Minister Isabel Celaá, as head of Education and Vocational Training and government spokesperson; the prosecutor Dolores DelgadO for Justice, and the secretary of Social Security and Pact of Toledo of the PSOE, Magdalena Valerio, for Labour.

At the head of the Ministry of Defense, Sánchez has placed the former Supreme Court judge Margarita Robles, who will assume the powers over the National Intelligence Center (CNI), she was in the last year as the parliamentary spokesperson in Congress.

The new Minister of the Interior is Magistrate Fernando Grande-Marlaska, who in the National Court, among other cases, prosecuted Arnaldo Otegi, ordered the entry into prison of José Ignacio de Juana Chaos and instructed the Faisán case about the tip-off to ETA.

Luis Planas, who was one of the rivals of the Andalusian President, Susana Díaz, in the primaries to elect the PSOE candidate for the Presidency of the Board in 2013, is the new Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and until now Deputy in the Assembly of Madrid Reyes Maroto, will take charge of the portfolio of Industry, Commerce and Tourism.

The last to be known and one of the most unexpected has been the appointment – which Sanchez himself has unveiled – of the journalist and writer Maxim Huerta as Minister of Culture and Sports.

On the other hand, the journalist Miguel Ángel Oliver, presenter and editor of the second edition of Noticias Cuatro, will be the new Secretary of State for Communication. (June 6, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
