Beijing / The virtuous Spanish voices of the tenor Plácido Domingo and the soprano Davinia Rodríguez are the stars of the debut in Beijing of “Thaïs”, by Jules Massenet,  from this Friday until February 6.

“The French repertoire is very beautiful and Massenet’s music has not yet been heard here,” the Spanish tenor told EFE during the rehearsal prior to the premiere of the opera on Friday at the Gran Teatro Nacional, popularly known as “El Huevo” , located next to the iconic Tiananmen Square.

Plácido, at 77 years old, returns to the stages of the Asian country, which he says keep very good memories, to represent the monk Athanael, a character that continues to be “very interesting and complicated.”

“From an early age he felt an admiration, almost a passion for Thaïs,” said Plácido Domingo, but when he realizes that “all men are crazy for her, then he wants to save her, perhaps out of jealousy.”

When Thaïs finally becomes a saint, Athanael goes mad. “He manages to take her away from that world, but in the end he’s crazy about it, it’s a great drama and with Massenet’s music it’s a big opera,” he said.

But without a doubt, the most special part of this performance, which will be on display until February 6, will be the Chinese spectators, who for the first time will discover through two generations of Spanish artists one of the classic operas.

Plácido Domingo said that in a very short time the Chinese public has developed a great taste and passion for opera and proves it, he assures, that since the Grand National Theater was inaugurated in 2007, 59 opera productions and 77 shows have been performed.

Although this time Domingo will not share the stage with Davinia Rodríguez – as it happened in Vienna with the opera “Macbeth” -, they are very close, since the two star in different passes that the opera will have in the capital.

At 37, this is the first time that the soprano debuts in China, where she hopes to reach and move the audience through “emotions, a universal language.”

Confesses that Thaïs is a “complicated” role, both vocally and interpretively, due to the transition of her character who is born a prostitute and ends up giving herself to God. “It requires everything the voice can offer,” he said. (February 2, 2018, EFE / PracticaEspañol)
