Police charges and unusual voting mark the day in Catalonia

Barcelona / The police charge before the polling stations and the unusual voting mode are marking the day of 1-O in Catalonia, where the State Security Forces have assumed the withdrawal of the ballot boxes to prevent the illegal referendum suspended by the Court Constitutional.

The 5.3 million Catalans who are called to the polls can vote at any electoral point, even if it is without envelopes and with ballots printed at home, but their voting will not be recorded by computer, since the security forces have blocked the established system.

This prevents the universal census, implanted by surprise 45 minutes before the beginning of the voting, is not available and that the members of the tables have to hand-point the names of the people who go to vote.

In this way, the same person can vote several times in different schools, which has led the Interior Minister, Juan Ignacio Zoido, to describe as “paripé” the illegal referendum intended by the regional government of Catalonia.

The Mossos say that there are 244 schools closed by judicial order until 5 pm, while Interior reports that the Police and Civil Guard have closed 92 of these centers and have arrested four people, including a minor of age, for resistance, disobedience and attacks on agents of authority.

The intervention of the National Police and the Civil Guard it has been surrounded by moments of tension with the pro-independence protesters before the doors of several polling centers, where the agents have forcibly removed some people.

According to the calculations of the Generalitat, until after five in the afternoon 465 people have been injured as a result of the intervention of the security forces to prevent the referendum, two of which are in serious condition in two hospitals in Barcelona.

One of them has been operated in one eye by the impact of a rubber ball – not used in Catalonia since 2014 – during the police action at the Ramon Llull school in Barcelona.

For its side, the Interior Ministry has indicated that nine policemen and three civil guards have also been slightly injured during the intervention.

In addition, agents of the Mossos d’Esquadra and the Guardia Civil have been faced on several occasions, during the interventions of the armed institute to close the voting centers. Six courts of Catalonia have already opened proceedings to investigate the actions of the Mossos for not having prevented the vote.

Another consequence of this day is that the match between Barcelona and Unión Deportiva Las Palmas is being played behind closed doors, and the theaters of Catalonia have announced that they suspend the functions scheduled for today “in condemnation for the unworthy situation that our country lives “.

Interior has appealed to the tranquility in the streets and has asked for collaboration and respect in the schools so that the security forces can comply with the judicial order to prevent in a peaceful way the celebration of the referendum suspended by the Constitutional.

Faced with accusations by social organizations such as the Catalan National Assembly and Òmnium, which have criticized the “violence of the state” in the dismantling of votes, Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido explained that agents have encountered “complicated” situations.

But only in one of them, in the center Ramon Llul of Barcelona, have had to use methods of defense by to be cornered, has assured.
