POPE TRAVELS TO MYANMAR AND BANGLADESH IN THE DRAMA OF THE ROHINGYA

On Sunday, Pope Francis undertakes a trip to Burma (Myanmar) and Bangladesh, where he will support the small Catholic communities and try to encourage dialogue in the face of problems such as the persecution of the Muslim minority of the Rohingya.

This will be one of his most complicated trips from a diplomatic point of view as he arrives in a country where, according to the UN, a gradual “ethnic cleansing” is being carried out against the Rohingya, who are forced to seek refuge in Bangladesh, risking and many times losing their own lives.

The situation is so delicate that even the local Church itself has asked the Pope not to pronounce the term Rohingya to avoid problems or outbreaks of violence among the most extreme people.

The first visit of a pope to Myanmar, the former Burma, will begin in the city of Rangoon and a day later will go to the capital Naipyido to meet with the authorities of the country. Among them will be the Burmese president, Htin Kyaw, and the leader of the Government and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Aung San Suu Kyi.

A mass will be celebrated before the small Catholic community of some 650,000 people and will meet with the Supreme Council of the Sangha of the Buddhist monks, an organ that groups together the top leaders of the dominant Buddhist branch.

Then, he will head to nearby Bangladesh and it will be there and not in Burma where the Pope will meet a group of the Rohina, refugees in appalling conditions and is likely to become one of the images of this trip.
