Pope Francis will travel to Chile and Peru between 15 and 21 January, according to the Vatican press office, stating that the travel programme will be published later.
“Welcoming the invitation of the respective heads of state and bishops, his Holiness Pope Francis will make an apostolic trip to Chile from 15 to 18 January , 2018,” according to a statement by the Vatican spokesman, Greg Burke.
The pontiff will visit Peru after, between 18 and 21 January , Burke specified.
In the first part of the trip, Pope Francis will visit the cities of Santiago, Temuco and Iquique.
In Peru, the Argentine pontiff will go to Lima, Puerto Maldonado and Trujillo.
“The program of the trip will be published in due course,” said the Vatican spokesman.
The pope will travel to Colombia next September between 6 and 10 September, in which it will be ,in principle, the international displacement number 20 of the pontiff.
In his pontificate, Francisco has already travelled to Latin America on several occasions: the first time, shortly after being elected Pope, he went to Brazil in July 2013 to participate in the 28th World Youth Day.
Later, in July of 2015, he travelled to Ecuador, Bolivia and Paraguay, and that same year he visited Cuba in a trip in which also he moved to the United States.
The last trip to Latin America was the one that Francisco made to Mexico in February 2016, although he made a stopover in Cuba before arriving in the United States.
Visit to Fatima
The Pope last travelled outside the Italian peninsula last May, when he travelled to Portugal to visit the Marian shrine of Fatima.
Although the pope himself announced his intention to travel to India and Bangladesh this year, there is still no date for this displacement, and sources from the Indian Episcopal Conference said last week that the delay in programming could force it to postpone it.
Neither will the Pope travel this year, against the intention he himself expressed, to South Sudan; The Vatican confirmed last month that there will be no displacement to that country, whose position the Pontiff described as “very ugly”, in reference to the food crisis caused by the conflict it is undergoing.
