Vladivostok (Russia) / Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un are hopeful that the talks they will hold at their first summit will contribute to the denuclearization process in the Korean peninsula and the normalization of relations between Pyongyang and Seoul.
“We appreciate your efforts to develop the inter-Korean dialogue and to normalize relations between North Korea and the United States”, Putin told Kim at the start of the summit being held at the Far Eastern Federal University on Russkiy Island.
The Russian president expressed his hope that Kim’s visit “will serve to develop bilateral relations” and also to “better understand how we can resolve the situation on the Korean peninsula, what we can do together, what Russia can do to support positive processes which are taking place now. ”
“I am pleased to see you in Russia, our colleagues have agreed with this meeting,” Putin told the North Korean leader, who was sitting next to him in one of the rooms at the summit headquarters.
Kim Jong-un in turn asked Putin to work together to explore ways to solve the denuclearization problem in the Korean peninsula.
“The situation on the Korean peninsula is of great interest to the entire international community. I hope our talks are an important event to assess this situation together, exchange views on the situation and how to solve this problem together”, Kim said.
The summit between the two leaders is held after the failure of the meeting between Kim and Trump in Hanoi last February.
Denuclearization and sanctions
The North Korean marshal wants a gradual denuclearization is accompanied by a progressive lifting of sanctions, an offer that Washington rejected in Vietnam, because he defends a “great agreement” that passes by eliminating all North Korean weapons programs, in addition to the atomic, before relaxing no sanction
For his part, Putin claims the denuclearization in the Korean peninsula and therefore has supported the sanctions in the Security Council every time there has been evidence in Pyongyang, but at the same time, he considers that it is necessary to offer Kim measures of reciprocity and security guarantees.
The North Korean leader also congratulated the Russian president for his re-election last year, while Putin did the same for Kim, who took power in North Korea in 2011.
Kim Jong-un also expressed his desire that the summit be “useful for strengthening and developing traditionally friendly relations” and that “they have deep roots”.
Putin also stressed that “bilaterally, we have much to do to develop commercial and economic ties, develop humanitarian contacts.”
The two leaders hold their bilateral meeting first and will later hold an expanded meeting with their respective delegations, which both Putin and Kim greeted on arrival at the summit headquarters.
The main theme on the agenda is a peaceful solution to the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula and the efforts of détente between the two Koreas, as well as bilateral relations – political, economic, cultural and humanitarian issues – and cooperation to guarantee security in North-East Asia.
The two leaders don’t expect to make statements at the end of the summit neither to sign agreements, according to the Kremlin. (April 25, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
