London / Queen Elizabeth II agreed Monday to a “period of transition” to accommodate Prince Harry and his wife Meghan’s wish to split their time between Canada and the UK.
The announcement came after the couple announced last week they would be stepping back as senior members of the royal family.
The Queen released a statement via Buckingham Palace, saying her family had held “very constructive discussions” on the future of the prince and his wife.
She said there were “complex matters for my family to resolve” and that “final decisions” would be made “in the coming days.”
The Queen expressed her support for her grandson, saying: “My family and I are entirely supportive of harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family.
“Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family,” the statement added.
Harry, his brother Prince William and their father Prince Charles could be seen leaving Sandringham – the Queen’s country retreat – separately following the family meeting.
The royal statement added that the young royals did “not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives.”
Harry and Meghan announced last week they plan to share their time between the UK and Canada – an announcement that drew a lot of media attention.
Amid growing media speculation over their fraternal relationship, William and Harry on Monday released a joint statement dismissing a story in an unspecified UK newspaper “speculating about the relationship” as “false” and “offensive.”
“For brothers who care so deeply about the issues surrounding mental health, the use of inflammatory language in this way is offensive and potentially harmful,” the brothers said.
The unexpected announcement of Harry, sixth in line to the throne behind his father, brother and his brother’s three children, and his wife has divided public opinion.
Some understand the couple’s desire for greater privacy while others question whether they will be able to be financed independently. (January 13, 2020, EFE/Practica Español)
