Madrid / The president of the Spanish Government, Mariano Rajoy, today announced the appointment of Román Escolano, until now vice president in the European Investment Bank (EIB), as Minister of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness, replacing Luis de Guindos.

The appointment was communicated this morning by Rajoy to King Felipe VI, before whom Escolano must swear his post in the next few hours.

In a statement, Escolano will join the meeting of the Council of Ministers next Friday, March 9.

Since 2014, Escolano has been the vice-president of the European Investment Bank (EIB), where he replaced Magdalena Álvarez after his resignation as a result of his imputation in the case of the EREs in Andalusia.

Previously, he had been president in the Official Credit Institute (ICO), between 2012 and 2014, a stage in which he actively collaborated to avoid the rescue of the Spanish economy.

In his first months in the post, he accompanied De Guindos to several trips to the United Kingdom, the United States or Japan to reassure international investors before the harassment suffered by the Spanish debt in the markets.

Before this stage, he had already had experience as a senior executive, since from 2000 to 2004 he was director of the Department of Economy of the Presidency of the Government during the second term of José María Aznar.

Later, he was director of Institutional Relations for BBVA (2006-2011).

In addition, he has been a member of the Boards of Directors of Correos, FEVE and ICEX (2000-2004), advisor to the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Javier Arenas (1998 and 1999), director of the Commercial Office of the Embassy of Spain in Thailand (1992-1997) and advisor to the Secretary of State for the European Communities (1991-1992).

Born in 1965 in Zaragoza, he was number one in the promotion of the Corps of Commercial Technicians and State Economists in 1989.

He holds a degree in Economics and Business Administration from the Autonomous University of Madrid and completed the Business Management Program of IESE (PADE).

He is married and has three children. (March 7, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
