Rio lights world’s largest floating Christmas tree

Rio de Janeiro / The Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro is once again home to the world’s largest floating Christmas tree.

The tree – constructed on a metal frame 70 meters (230 feet) high and including 900,000 LED lightbulbs – was illuminated on Saturday on Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon in southern Rio accompanied by a seven-minute fireworks show and amid great anticipation after a two-year absence.

The last time the tree was set up was in 2015, when a heavy snowstorm split it in two a week before it was to be illuminated, forcing authorities to reduce its height from the traditional 85 meters to a little over 50 meters.

The tree will be lit up every night through Jan. 6, a period during which there will be all sorts of outdoor cultural activities including concerts, assorted Christmas decorations and a viewing stand set up from where people may take photos of the tree.

Even Santa Claus – called Papa Noel here – will be present, although only on weekends.

The mayor’s office said that the floating tree, the largest of its kind in the world, as per the Guinness Records Book, normally receives some 200,000 visitors during the Christmas holidays.

Rio de Janeiro state, where most of the population lives in the Rio metro area, is going through a serious economic crisis aggravated by numerous corruption scandals and lack of public safety. (December 4, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
