Park City, USA / The icy mountains of Park City, Utah, on Thursday welcomed a new edition of Sundance, the film festival started by Robert Redford and known as the Mecca of independent film, which welcomes thousands of people wanting to see the emerging talents of the big screen.
The festival runs until Feb. 3, showing 241 full-length and short films from 49 different countries that the organizers expect 124,000 to watch.
Those responsible for the festival also stressed their commitment to diversity: 47 percent of all full-length and short films were directed or produced by at least one woman, 41 percent by at least one non-white person, and 17 percent by someone in the LGBT community.
Redford, a Hollywood legend who is also a key figure for unconventional film lovers since he founded Sundance, appeared in the opening press conference but only spoke briefly.
“I think we’re at a point where I can move on to a different place, because the thing I’ve missed over the years is being able to spend time with the films and with the filmmakers and to see their work and be part of their community,” he said.
“I don’t think the festival needs a whole lot of introduction now – it runs on its own course, and I’m happy for that, so let me just say I am grateful that you’re here,” he said before leaving the stage.
The doubts about whether Redford plans to leave the leadership of Sundance could, perhaps, strengthen the path to retirement of the artist, who said recently that “The Old Man & the Gun” (2018) will be his last film as an actor.
The programming director of Sundance, Kim Yutani, stressed the intentions of her team concerning efforts to find new voices, new perspectives and new ways of telling stories in film.
The film “After the Wedding” was set to open this Sundance on Thursday with the great cast led by Julianne Moore, Michelle Williams and Billy Crudup.
This edition of Sundance will feature numerous stars besides those “made in Hollywood” such as Naomi Watts (“Luce”), Zac Efron (“Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile”), Jake Gyllenhaal (“Velvet Buzzsaw”), Viola Davis (“Troop Zero”), Keira Knightley (“Official Secrets”), Emma Thompson (“Late Night”), and Adam Driver (“The Report”).
The documentary genre is also expected to play a leading role, especially the film “Leaving Neverland” which is about the alleged abuses of minors committed by Michael Jackson.
With the festival heating up, Sundance received on its opening day the first moviegoers, who, waiting for the great majority of spectators to arrive over the weekend, shared space with the numerous ski fans that regularly visit Park City
Located at an altitude of more than 2,000 meters and with 8,400 inhabitants, this small town 53 kilometers away from Salt Lake City has become an obligatory destination for the audiovisual industry, which packs its bags every year to go to Utah in the middle of the Hollywood awards season.
With temperatures that are not suitable for cold drinks – the maximum on Thursday was -2 degrees and the minimum was -10 – here the actors change their sunglasses for sturdy coats and boots, the Los Angeles palm trees for the snow of Utah, and the Beverly Hills terraces for the slippery, icy streets of Park City.
But shivering or staying almost frozen can compensate those who seek their great moment in the films if you read the list of names that have impressed at Sundance: Quentin Tarantino, Steven Soderbergh, Kevin Smith, Jim Jarmusch or Darren Aronofsky.
Another king of the festival was Harvey Weinstein, who with the Miramax company was the key in the phenomenon of “indie” film. But this year he will be only the protagonist of the documentary “Untouchable”, which portrays his rise and fall as a producer. (January 24, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
