Santander / The Government of Cantabria has already begun the process of appointing the former PSOE leader and former minister and vice president of the nation’s executive, Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, honorary citizen of Cantabria posthumously.
It is the maximum distinction granted by the region to those people who, “having been born in Cantabria, have stood out for their relevant merits, especially for their work or cultural, scientific, social, political or economic activities for the benefit of the autonomous community”, as it is included in the Law of Honors, Decorations and Distinctions.
The president of Cantabria, Miguel Angel Revilla, and the vice president, Eva Diaz Tezanos, agreed last Friday, May 10, the date on which the politician born in Solares died, to begin the administrative file for this appointment issued by the head of the Cantabrian Executive and that will approve by decree the Council of Government.
In this way, the autonomous community of Cantabria wants to give Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba his highest distinction in recognition of his “extensive professional career in public service” and the “affection of the Cantabrian people towards his person”, as has been noted in these last days.
Perez Rubalcaba died on Friday after suffering a stroke and his ashes are resting in the cemetery of La Paz-Tres Cantos, in the Madrid town of Alcobendas, with his parents.
As explained to EFE family sources, all the flowers received these days have been delivered to the PSOE to be distributed during the election campaign in the rallies held in the various Spanish municipalities.
Farewell in Congress
More than a thousand people bid farewell yesterday at the Puerta de los Leones in the Congress in the exit of the coffin of the historic Socialist leader, flanked by the President of the Government, Pedro Sanchez, and the Congress, Ana Pastor, as well as by senior officials and the PSOE.
When introducing it in the hearse, the citizens gathered there shouted “viva España” and “mucho ánimo” to the close friends of the politician and to the socialist leaders.
After that public farewell the burial and its incineration was held in the strictest privacy.
Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba died aged 67 after an intense life dedicated to politics. He was minister of Education and Presidency with Felipe Gonzalez y del Interior and first vice president with Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, was a reference in the last decades of the PSOE, of which he became secretary general.
Born in Solares, Cantabria, on July 28, 1951, he was doctor in Chemical Sciences in the Complutense University of Madrid and after his political career, professor of Organic Chemistry of this university. (May 13, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
