RUSSIA OPENS WORLD CUP

Moscow / Russia today opened the World Cup, the first held in Eastern Europe, with a brief but intense ceremony in which the Spanish Iker Casillas and the Brazilian Ronaldo have played a leading role.

“I wish successes to all teams and unforgettable emotions to the fans,” Russian President Vladimir Putin has proclaimed from the rostrum.

The Luzhnikí stadium, a stadium with capacity for 81,000 spectators, has dressed in its finery to open a tournament that has kicked off with the match between the host, Russia and Saudi Arabia and the absence of Western leaders.

On the outskirts of the stadium the statue of Lenin, the founder of the USSR, has presided over the arrival of fans to a stadium that will also host the grand final on July 15.

The leaders of countries like Germany, Angela Merkel, or France, Emmanuel Macron, may attend World Cup matches, but the governments from United Kingdom, Australia, Poland, Denmark or Iceland have already announced that they will not travel to Russia.

The ceremony has been a cocktail of the main exponents of the Russian soul, classical music, fine arts and ballet, and the new rhythms of popular culture.

One of the highlights was when British pop star Robbie Williams and Russian soprano Aida Garufillina – who at the age of 31 has won the Vienna Opera – have performed together one of the greatest hits by this British: “Angels”.

The Spanish Iker Casillas, world champion in 2010, has given the starting signal to the party minutes before its start by bringing to the field the trophy that will be raised in this same stadium by the winner of the tournament.

The guest star has been “O fenómeno” Ronaldo who with a feint has given the symbolic initial kick along with the mascot of the tournament, Zabivaka, because he has given the ball to a Russian boy, gesture that awoke the first great ovation of the day.

The World Cup, which is being held for the first time in Eastern Europe, will be played by 32 teams, which will be divided into eleven cities and twelve stadiums, from the Baltic coast to the Urals.

A total of 736 players have been registered in the tournament, which will conclude next July 15 in this same stadium with the grand final.

Panama and Iceland debut in a World Cup in which the great absences are Italy – the only world champion that does not participate -, Netherlands and Chile. (June 14, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
