Moscow / Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny is unconscious in hospital and suspected to have been poisoned, his press secretary Kira Yarmysh said Thursday.
“Alexei is still on a ventilator. He is in a coma in serious condition,” Yarmysh wrote on Twitter.
Navalny is an outspoken critic of President Vladmir Putin who has been at the forefront of the fight against corruption in the country.
The 44-year-old fell ill during a flight from the Siberian city of Tomsk to Moscow. The plane made an emergency landing at an airport in Omsk, where he was admitted to hospital.
“We assume that Alexei was poisoned with something mixed into his tea. It was the only thing that he drank this morning. Doctors say the toxin was absorbed faster through the hot liquid. Alexei is now unconscious,” Yarmysh said.
The hospital’s chief physician told state news agency TASS that he is “in serious condition.” The agency added that Navalny had been admitted to Omsk Ambulance Hospital number 1’s toxicology intensive care unit.
The press secretary for the Russian politician said police were called to the hospital at their request, and that “the evasive reaction of doctors only confirms that this is poisoning.”
“Just two hours ago, they were ready to share any information, and now they are clearly playing for time and do not say what they know,” she added.
“The intensive care unit is full of police officers. They try to get an explanation from the doctor. The doctor saw me in the distance in the corridor, said that ‘some things are confidential’ and took the police to another room.”
Yarmysh also recalled an incident last year in which Nalvalny suffered an allergic reaction that his doctor said may have indicated poisoning. At the time, he was serving a 30-day prison sentence after his arrest for calling people to attend an anti-government protest.
“A year ago, when Alexei was in jail, he was poisoned,” she wrote. “Obviously the same thing has happened again.”
Navalny, a skilled communicator, had been traveling through Siberia to support some candidates in next months’ local elections.
On Wednesday he posted a photo on Instagram from Tomsk showing him posing with young voters. (August 20, 2020, EFE/PracticaEspañol)
