SALVINI REITERATES CLOSURE OF THE ITALIAN PORTS IN THE MIDDLE OF A REBELLION OF MAYORS

Rome / The Italian Interior Minister and leader of the extreme right-wing League, Matteo Salvini, is furious. Several mayors refuse to abide by the anti-immigrant norms approved by the Italian populist government while Salvini reiterates Italian ports are closed for illegal immigrants.

“We have already welcomed too many false fugitives, we have enriched too many smugglers. The mayors of the left must think about the difficulties of their citizens and not the clandestine ones, “said Salvini today.

Thus, he responded to the offer launched by the mayor of Naples, Luigi de Magistris, to open this Italian port for the ship Sea Watch 3, which with dozens of immigrants rescued in the Mediterranean was able to enter the waters of Malta yesterday but has no authorization to disembark.

“I will be the first to lead the rescue maneuvers,” said the mayor of this southern city.

But another mayor, Palermo’s mayor, Leoluca Orlando, announced he was suspending the application of Salvini’s so-called “security decree”.

Orlando, of the opposition Democratic Party, said he will not comply with the law, which restricts the rights of immigrants and toughens the conditions for asylum seekers because that “decree – he said – is inhumane and turns immigrants into criminals”.

Salvini didn’t doubt and said that “the mayor comes up with civil disobedience about immigrants with all the problems that Palermo has”, something rejected by the mayor of Palermo for whom it is not disobedience but about the “application of constitutional rights” guaranteed for all those living in Italy.
