Riyadh/ Suleimán al Asad / For the first time, Saudi women have achieved to cheer their clubs in Saudi Arabia from the stands of a football stadium, a historic event at a time when there are small improvements for them, even though the ultraconservative kingdom continues to limit their freedoms.
“My father used to tell me that the day would come when she would shout from the stands,” recalls Afnan, 28, and one of the spectators of the match between the local clubs Al Ahli and Al Batin, held last night in the city of Jeddah, in the west of the country.
“And that day has arrived. The augury of my father has been fulfilled” says this Saudi woman emotion, who went to the stadium accompanied by his father.
Although in the stands called “family sections” Afnan was able to sit next to his father, many women could not enjoy the match with the males because this new measure forces the females to sit in those special stands, separated by barriers of the crowd masculine.
Despite these restrictions, Afnan and some 1,200 more women clamoured with coloured abayas, forgetting the rigorous black that has prevailed in Saudi society, from the Al Yawara Radio stadium each player’s name of the two clubs, especially the Al Ahli, who beat Al Batin 5-0 in the Saudi Super Cup match.
“For years, I have felt hurt every time there was a match and my father was attending with my brothers to the stadium and I could only watch the game on TV”, evokes the young woman, fan of Al Ahli and who complains that when her club won the league in 2016, could not celebrate with their male relatives.
Now, she has captured that moment with numerous photos in front of the stadium and as a reminder she has gone along with more women to the souvenir shop of the Ahli in the place of the match.
And in spite of the fact that in the ultraconservative realm, there is a strict public separation between men and women, as well as some rules for them – they are still subject to a system of men’s tutoring – dictated by traditions and an extremist version of religion, Saudi Arabia is beginning to change and implement small improvements for women.
All these efforts have been promoted, especially since the appointment last year of Mohamed bin Salman, 32, Crown Prince to the Saudi crown, who has influenced to take one of the most important measures for women and that will apply as of June this year: the lifting of the driving ban.
