SEVERA DINASTY FROM THE IMPERIAL ROME COMES BACK TO COLOSSEUM

Rome / The Roman Coliseum revives the forty years of the Severa dynasty that, with the “edict of Caracalla” of 212, extended Roman citizenship to all the inhabitants of the empire in the years prior to the crisis of the third century.

“The objective of the exhibition is to make known to the public the last period of the empire in which Rome was large, ruled by emperors who left a strong and lasting legacy in many fields, despite the advance of decadence”, Alfonsina Russo, director of the Colosseum Archaeological Park, explains in a note.

At the time, Rome had reached enormous dimensions and, despite the demographic decline, had about 700,000 inhabitants.

A journey through time to know the reforms and the impulse to the art of these emperors compose the exhibition Roma Universalis. The empire and the dynasty that came from Africa that extends from the Colosseum to the Roman and Palatine Forum.

The busts of the dynasty open the exhibition, with Septimius Severus of Leptis Magna, in present-day Libya, and his wife Julia Domna of Homs, in Syria, a woman of great political influence, and in four sections the historical-political developments are illustrated, the artistic and architectural evolution in Rome and in the regions of the then empire, which was expanding throughout the Mediterranean.

A CADASTRAL MAP

Among the exhibits are fragments of the Forma Urbis, a cadastral map of marble commissioned by Septimius Severus. Nowadays it is still an inescapable document for the study of the old topography of the city and that is exhibited with a meticulous multimedia reconstruction.

“Roma Universalis”, open until August 31, 2019, is enriched by other stages along the Roman and Palatine Forum, with a series of passages between the monuments that this dynasty built or restored in the most famous archaeological area of the world.

The dynasty revolutionized the road system of Rome and completed the process of “romanization” understood as the political unification of all the free inhabitants of the empire, and the integration between the different peoples of the Mediterranean and Europe.

Moving bulky goods such as wheat, oil and wine to provide food for the inhabitants or wood, bricks and marble for thermal baths and the construction industry involved a complex organization.

Severe Septimius also established the annona militaris to pay in kind and not only in cash part of the salary to the soldiers. (December 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
