Madrid / The snow and cold weather keeps twelve autonomous communities on alert for freezing temperatures, intense waves and snowfalls that can leave floors covered in snow up to 30 centimeters thick, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) today in its website.

Several of these Spanish autonomous communities, such as Cantabria, Navarra, Asturias, Castilla y León and the Basque Country are on orange alert due to heavy snowfalls, even in some metropolises, and others, such as Madrid, have a yellow alert triggered by a sudden drop in temperatures.

Regions in orange alert

Cantabria is in orange alert (significant risk) for heavy snowfall in Liébana (30 cm), areas of the center and valley of Villaverde, and the Aemet warning that the level of accumulation will be about 700/800 meters down to 600/700 meters.

Castilla y León is in orange alert in the provinces of Burgos, León and Palencia due to snowfalls of 20 centimeters in areas of the Cantabrian Mountains and Treviño County, at a height between 600/800 meters, while in Soria there is yellow warning for snow in the Iberian; in Ávila, Salamanca and Segovia there is also yellow warning for minimum of 6 degrees below zero.

Catalonia has orange alert in Gerona for strong swell with north and northwest winds and waves of 3 to 4 meters; yellow warning in the rest of the community for wind, snow or cold.

Regions in yellow alert

Madrid continues in yellow alert for minimum temperatures of 8 degrees below zero in the mountains and 4 degrees below zero in the metropolitan area, Henares, las vegas and south and west areas. In the mountains, the gusts of wind will be very strong and will affect mainly the peaks, with temperatures below zero all day and snow.

The Community of Aragon maintains a yellow alert in all its provinces due to snow or intense cold, and in Castilla-La Mancha there is a cold alert in Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca and Guadalajara and alert for snow in Cuenca and Guadalajara, with higher incidence in the mountains.

On the shores of the Mediterranean, the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands are on yellow alert for snow (Mallorca), low temperatures and intense gusts of wind.
