Space lettuce: The quest for a sustainable trip to Mars

Prague / A team from the Czech University of Agriculture is faced with the otherworldly task of growing lettuce, radishes, basil and potatoes under Martian conditions in a bid to solve the problem of food supply for future manned missions to the Red Planet.

Headed by Czech-Croatian scientist Jan Lukacevic, project Marsonaut, which began last year, has been endowed with an initial grant of 40,000 euros ($43, 675) and its findings could also help farmers overcome environmental challenges here on Earth.

But the main objective for the team of Prague-based botanists and laboratory engineers is to create a self-sufficient and sustainable vegetable farm on Mars, Lukacevic told EFE.

“We aim to improve the technology that we have nowadays so that it could eventually be used on Mars, we’re still a long way from that point but we’re taking small steps towards that goal,” he said.

Apart from the obvious hurdle presented by water scarcity on Mars, the team must also figure out how to deal with different conditions of gravity and potential soil contamination.

“There’s some water on Mars, but definitely not as much as would be needed for a traditional agriculture process, so we have to aim for methods that are much more sustainable.”

“I would say sustainability is a big topic in this field as well because you have a limited supply of resources on Mars and throughout the journey towards Mars, so you have to work out the whole process with a limited amount of things you can take with you,” he added.

The expert’s team collaborates with the German Eden ISS project, which provides the seeds, and is working on a similar endeavor.

It is unclear when a manned space mission to Mars will take place, although US President Donald Trump asked NASA to speed up its plans to explore outer space with the goal of sending human beings to Mars in the 2030s.

Lukacevic did not hide his excitement at the prospect of being involved in such a mission.

The Czech team used aeroponic technologies in its quest to solve the spatial puzzle, a process whereby plants are grown without soil in an air or mist environment.

The roots of the plants are sprayed with nitrogen nutrients and the water, which runs in a circuit, is recycled.

Relying on solar energy can be tricky on Mars, where frequent dust storms block out the Sun, so scientists must think of alternative arrangements, such as thermonuclear energy.

In the Prague laboratory, there is a diode system that imitates sunlight at all times.

To avoid contamination through human contact, a Martian vegetable patch would ideally need to be self-sufficient and automated. (September 27, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
