Spain begins ten days of official mourning for the victims of the coronavirus

Madrid / The Government plans to declare today in the Council of Ministers ten days of official mourning for the victims of the coronavirus, the longest period of mourning in Spain’s recent democratic phase, as announced last Saturday by the President, Pedro Sánchez.

Mourning will begin on the same Tuesday when the entire Spanish territory is at least in phase 1 of de-escalation of the confinement launched throughout the country by the state of alarm decreed on March 14 that sought to curb the expansion of the COVID-19 when 120 deaths and more than 4,200 infections had already been registered.

Just yesterday, a new Health counting system reduced the total number of deaths from the disease by almost 2,000 from the start of the pandemic to 26,834 deaths, due to duplications or unconfirmed cases that the communities reported in their day, according to Fernando Simón, director of the Health Alerts Coordination Center.

When announcing mourning on Saturday in a telematic appearance from the Moncloa Palace, Sánchez indicated that after Spanish society has “stopped the worst health calamity of the last century”, during the “longest official mourning in the history of the democracy ”the flags of public buildings and navy ships will fly at half-staff.

The chief executive then affirmed that the victims of the pandemic deserve their memory to endure in an “even greater” tribute of “coexistence and harmony”.

“We must live together in the same country that they built,” he said, adding that there will be a great act of homage and other commemorations presided over by King Felipe VI.

The official mourning comes with a deep confrontation between the Government and the main opposition party, the Popular Party (PP), both for its position in the face of the state of alarm and its extensions, and for the agreement that the Government parties signed with EH Bildu last week to repeal the labor reform.

To the PP leader, Pablo Casado, it seems that the official mourning that the Government will decree is a mere “smokescreen” to try to cover up the controversy of that agreement. (May 26, 2020, EFE / PracticaEspañol)
