Spain crosses a new barrier in infections and deaths due to coronavirus

Madrid / With three million infected with covid, Spain has crossed another psychological barrier in its fight against the pandemic, which, despite slowing its transmission speed, with fewer infections and a lower accumulated incidence, onTuesday has notified the highest death toll of the third wave: 766 deaths.

The Ministry of Health has notified 16,402 new positives since yesterday, Monday, bringing the total number to 3,005,487 infections, and 766 deaths in the last 24 hours: 63,061 people have died from coronavirus in Spain.

The 766 deaths is a similar figure to that recorded at the end of March and is the highest of the second and third waves reported in one day. This doesn’t mean that the deaths have occurred in the last 24 hours but that they have been reported by the communities in this period and correspond to deaths that occurred on different days.

The cumulative incidence per 100,000 cases in 14 days hasn’t stopped falling since last January 28 when it was at 889 points, and today it stands at 630, which is 37 points less than on Monday.

All the communities are below 1,000 cases: the Valencian Community leads the list with 965, followed by Castilla y León, with 870, and La Rioja, with 852. Melilla (811) is also above the national average. Madrid (759) and Castilla-La Mancha (720).

On Tuesday, the hospital pressure in the intensive care units has experienced a slight decrease of one point to 42.2% occupancy, with 4,594 admitted patients (138 less than yesterday).

Police, firefighters and teachers, next to be vaccinated with Astrazeneca after health professionals

The Public Health Commission has decided that the security forces and bodies, firefighters, members of the Armed Forces and teachers will be the next groups to be immunised with AstraZeneca’s vaccine after second-line health and social care professionals.

Within this group that they established last week, the Commission has defined a new subgroup (3B), which includes groups based on the risk of exposure from work activity: physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacy office personnel, legal medicine , home help services, centers for minors and day centers and workers of Penitentiary Institutions.

Some agreements of the Commission that are “binding”, as warned after the Council of Ministers by the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, who recalled that the vaccination strategy is “unique” for all territories and, therefore, should immunize to groups as established by that body.

And it is that before knowing the order set for the administration of the AstraZeneca vaccine -which will only be inoculated to people between 18 and 55 years old-, Catalonia, which on Tuesday received 3,040 doses of that vaccine, had already decided to immunize the collectives now established by the health authorities.

In the Valencian Community, the distribution of the first doses of AstraZeneca in public and private centers has begun and, between this Tuesday and Wednesday, 9,690 doses will be distributed, of which 4,320 are destined to second-line health personnel in private centers and the others 5,370 to staff of public centers.

838,782 vaccinated with the two doses

The number of immunized with the two doses amounts to 838,782 people. The autonomous regions have already received 2,412,555 injections with the arrival of the first vaccine doses of AstraZeneca.

According to Health Ministry, of this total dose, 2,167,241 doses have already been administered, 89.8% of those received, and that in one day more than 52,000 people have already been given the complete schedule.

Extension of restrictions on flights from the United Kingdom, Brazil and South Africa

On Tuesday, it has also been known that the Government has extended until March 2 the restrictions on the entry of flights from the United Kingdom, South Africa and Brazil, except for nationals and residents of Spain and Andorra, due to the coronavirus strains detected in those countries.

This is the fourth extension in the case of the United Kingdom and will be in force from 6:00 p.m. on February 16 to 6:00 p.m. (Peninsular time) on March 2, while that of Brazil and South Africa will enter into force from 9:00 a.m. on February 17 to 6:00 p.m. (Peninsular time) on March 2.

From today, Tuesday, February 9, until March 1, the restrictions on land borders with Portugal have also been extended, so that only Spanish residents, cross-border workers, transporters or for essential causes may cross through authorized crossings.

Justice orders the reopening of the hotel business in the Basque Country

There have also been changes in the restrictions imposed on the hospitality industry in the Basque Country. From tomorrow Wednesday, the bars and restaurants that are in municipalities considered “red zone” due to the high rate of infections by covid-19 will be able to reopen their doors.

They will do so after the Superior Court of Justice (TSJ) of that community has cautiously accepted the request of the hospitality associations, considering that this sector “does not appear to be an element of true and serious risk to public health” taking into account the current capacity limitations, the distance of at least a meter and a half between people seated at different tables and sanitary measures such as the use of masks.

This same Tuesday, the hoteliers demanded help in the various protests that have staged on the streets of many Spanish cities, where they have thrown plates on the ground as a sign of complaint. “We are fed up with carrying the can”, they have denounced. (February 9, 2021, EFE / PracticaEspañol)
