Spain is following with EU situation in Venezuela closely

Madrid / On Wednesday, the Spanish Government reported it is following the evolution of events in Venezuela “closely”, and is doing so in contact with its partners in the European Union (EU).

Sources from the Spanish Executive explained it is in contact with the other member states of the Union within the framework of the International Contact Group promoted by the community club to dialogue with all the conflicting parties in Venezuela and try to create conditions for the celebration of new presidential elections.

They have also stated “there is no news” in relation to the situation of the opposition leader, Leopoldo Lopez, who is a refugee in the residence of the Spanish ambassador in Caracas, together with his wife and fifteen-month-old daughter, although he has not requested asylum to Spain.

According to sources, Spain occupies a “leading position” in the International Contact Group, which on Wednesday issued a statement in which it reaffirms its support for a political, peaceful and democratic solution to the Venezuelan crisis, within the framework of the Constitution of that country.

“The current events confirm the need for that political solution,” adds the note, in which the Group emphasizes that this crisis is aggravating the humanitarian situation of the Venezuelan people.

Respect for human and civil rights

It also expresses its firm opposition to the use of force, calls for the containment of security forces and stresses the need to respect the human and civil rights of all Venezuelans.

The freedom of the media must be restored and all political prisoners must be freed,” adds the Group, sponsored by the EU and made up of European and Latin American countries, whose mission is to create the conditions for elections to be held in Venezuela. presidential elections, in line with international standards.

Specifically, the EU participates as an institution and eight of its member states (Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Holland, Portugal, Sweden and UK), as well as Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Uruguay on the Latin American side. (May 1, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
