SPAIN IS KEPT IN POSITION 28 OF THE WORLD INNOVATION INDEX 2017

Spain is ranked 28th, at exactly the same level as last year, in the World Innovation Index 2017 published today by two study centers and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

The classification of WIPO and U.S. Cornell University, as well as the French business school INSEAD, assesses the situation in 127 economies through dozens of parameters, ranging from the filing of patent applications to expenditure on education and it is leading by Switzerland, Sweden, Holland, USA, UK, Denmark, Singapore, Finland, Germany and Ireland.

The document stresses that Spain has “far superior” rates to its level of development, given that among the high-income countries is ranked 27 and among Europeans in position 18.

Specifically, Spain has improved considerably in the parameter “efficiency”, following a trend that began three years ago, which puts it in 2017 in the 36th position.

Another positive indicator is the “quality of innovation“, where Spain is ranked 21 in the high income group and 22 in the overall ranking.

Other “strengths identified” are the quality of their universities; the years spent studying; the high number of enrollments in higher education; expenditure on Research and Development by companies; and the good infrastructure, including good online government services and sustainable ecological development.

On the other hand, the main weaknesses are the low number of patent applications, given that Spain remains below the average for high-income countries; the cost of layoffs; difficulty in establishing a business; and spending on education.
