Madrid / The sixth and last extension of the state of alarm, approved this Wednesday by Congress, will enter into force on Sunday and will last until June 21, on the gates that the average Spain that aspires to advance this Monday to phase 3 of the The de-escalation begins, if the evolution of the epidemic allows it, the stage called “new normal”, which will be regulated by a royal decree that the Government plans to approve next week.
This decree will try to guarantee the measures that the health authorities consider necessary to contain and control SARS-CoV-2, which in the last 24 hours has caused 219 new infections in Spain, more than half of them in Madrid, according to the data. officers, which record 63 deaths in the last seven days, double the number reported yesterday, but only one is added to the total, which now stands at 27,128.
The approval of the extension of the state of alarm, with the votes of the PNV and Cs and again the abstention of the ERC, came after a new session of Parliament full of tension, in which the PP and Vox, with a new battery of accusations and disqualifications, they have not given a truce to the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, who has strongly defended the Interior Minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, shaken by the dismissal of Civil Guard colonel Diego Pérez de los Cobos.
The coronavirus crisis placed healthcare personnel in the foreground from the beginning, whose effort and dedication has been honored today with the Prince of Asturias Award for Concord. The jury has highlighted his “heroic spirit of sacrifice”, which has received unanimous and timely applause from millions of citizens every day from the windows and balconies of their homes during the weeks of confinement.
The Council of Ministers to be held next Tuesday will approve a royal decree with the sanitary measures and regulations for the exit from the crisis after the state of alarm, in that period of indeterminate duration called with the controversial euphemism of “new normality” , which would start on Sunday June 21.
The decree announced by the Government will be, according to what Pedro Sánchez said today, “the most basic possible” because it will only try to guarantee the measures that the Ministry of Health considers necessary to contain the coronavirus or to face possible spikes or sprouts, especially from the point of view of mobility.
If the deadlines set so far were maintained, on June 22 almost half of the Spanish population would have completed their transit through phase 3, although to a large extent it will depend on their respective autonomous governments, which in that phase regain all their powers. Madrid, Barcelona and its metropolitan area, Castilla y León and the Valencian Community have not yet done so, the only one that this week does not ask for progress.
In order for this calendar to take place, it is essential that the favorable evolution of the epidemic continue, which this Wednesday has registered 87 more infections than yesterday until 219, the vast majority (112) in Madrid, followed at a distance from Catalonia (38). The director of the Center for Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies, Fernando Simón, has said that the majority are asymptomatic and mild cases.
But where the controversy persists, with large doses of perplexity, is in the accounting for deaths from coronavirus and the data reported today have only increased that feeling, since 63 deaths have been reported in the last seven days, almost double compared to yesterday, although the total (27,128) only adds one.
Simón has insisted that only the deaths reported with yesterday’s death date have been added to the statistics and that the series, under review for several weeks, is “frozen” until all the communities update the data.
44,000 more deaths
That the number of deaths from covid-19 was much higher than that recorded daily by the statistics of the communities and of Health was revealed in the first weeks of the confinement, based on the data that were arriving from the successive deaths in nursing homes.
Soon the funeral homes and civil registries began to point out the excess of deaths, which ended up corroborating the Daily Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo) of the Carlos III Health Institute and which this Wednesday collects the National Institute of Statistics (INE), which quantifies that excess at 43,945, compared to 27,128 in the official calculation, which only attributes to the covid-19, as indicated by the WHO, those confirmed with diagnostic tests.
According to INE data, in the first 21 weeks of this year (from January 1 to May 24, 24% more deaths have been recorded compared to the same period of the previous year, giving a total of 225,930.
This excess of deaths is concentrated in the months of March and April, when the epidemic was reaching its peak, since the week with the highest number of deaths was from March 30 to April 5, with 20,575 people, a 154.6% more than in the same week of the previous year. From May 18 the figures return to normal values.
The president of Congress, Meritxell Batet, tried in recent days, with a call to parliamentary spokespersons, to lower the growing tone of disqualifications that has been taking over the parliamentary debates throughout the epidemic week by week, but everything has been in an attempt and this Wednesday they were heard even louder than previous Wednesday, criticism, harsh accusations and potential charges of crimes.
The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, more interested than anyone in the fact that the verbal tone declined, has called for harmony, but the PP leader, Pablo Casado, has accused him of spreading lies and discord, of erasing the dead “like the totalitarians, who erased their enemies from the photos”, before and after announcing that they will request the creation of a commission of inquiry into “the dire management of the pandemic.”
Married has addressed Sánchez as Otegi or Torra in the counter-reply, as has the president of Vox, Santiago Abascal, who, as usual, has looked at the second vice-president of the Government, Pablo Iglesias, to say that he “wishes a civil war ”and warn that“ in his vanity and fanaticism he is capable of causing any drama in Spain”.
“Casado and Abascal, both rides, rides so much,” replied Sánchez, who has reproached them for using the Spanish flag against other Spaniards and has accused them of promoting hatred: “Let’s say no to the poison of hate, not to violence verbal, physical, not to insult and not to provocation ”.
In the interventions of Casado and Abascal, the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, was well present, whose resignation has been requested by the controversial replacement of the Colonel of the Civil Guard Diego Pérez de los Cobos and his successive and contradictory explanations regarding with the reasons for this cessation and the judicial investigation by the unit that he was directing about the coronavirus and the authorization of the 8M demonstration in Madrid.
Sánchez has defended Marlaska and has related Casado’s attacks with the fact, as he has said, that “he is uncovering the patriotic police”, dedicated, he added, “to defend the activities of the PP, including the persecution of political adversaries and the cover-up of various corruptions of his party when he governed ”.
