Spain: The debate of the candidates was seen by 8.9 million viewers

Madrid / The debate of the candidates of the four parties with greater parliamentary representation emitted by RTVE and ten autonomic channels last night and it was followed by a total of 8.88 million spectators – almost the same number of undecided to six days of the general elections on Sunday in Spain- with an audience measurement of 43 percent, according to data from Kantar Media.

The golden minute of the debate was recorded at 23:00 when the audience increased to 9.6 million viewers and audience measurement up to 47%.

The televised debate was held between the candidates from the four parties which obtained highest parliamentary representation in 2016, Partido Popular (PP), Pablo Casado (137 seats reached by Mariano Rajoy); Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE), Pedro Sanchez, (85 seats); Ciudadanos (C’S), Albert Rivera, (32 seats), and Unidas Podemos, Pablo Iglesias, (71 seats).

Days before, the Central Electoral Board blocked the participation of VOX, party to the right of the PP, led by Santiago Abascal, to which the polls predict an entry into the Spanish Parliament with a range of between ten and 30 deputies.

The first electoral debate evidences the blocks on the left and on the right

The first of the two debates held between the main candidates for the Moncloa has made clear the two blocks on the left (PSOE and Unidas Podemos) and on the right (PP and C’s), existing among the candidates of the four parties with greater parliamentary representation, as well as the absence of previous commitments of pacts, reports EFE.

Pablo Casado and Albert Rivera accused the Prime Minister of putting at risk the unity of Spain for agreeing with the independence movement and asked him to say if he is going to pardon the people responsible for the “procés” and criticized his fiscal or social policy, with matching arguments.

Pedro Sanchez warned of a possible pact between PP and C’s with the far right (in reference to Vox), thanked the support of Unidas Podemos for its social measures and sent more than a tacit support to Pablo Iglesias. Meanwhile, Pablo Iglesias was “disappointed” because the chief executive didn’t answer his question of whether he is willing to agree with Ciudadanos after Sunday.

Today Tuesday, second round of the electoral debate in Atresmedia

The candidates were satisfied with their first public confrontation on public television sets and called on the audience to follow the second debate, this time on private television.

Hour and a half of debate which began with wars of figures, such as those of employment -asked talking about destruction and Sanchez of creation-, or about fiscal policy, with the leader of the PP and the Ciudadanos promising massive tax cuts and Sanchez and Iglesias warning that only the rich people pay less with a right-wing party.

Catalonia stirred the debate

Pablo Casado and Albert Rivera demanded the President of the Government say publicly if he plans to pardon the leaders responsible for the “procés” if they are convicted.

And Sanchez replied they should respect the separation of powers and let the Supreme Court work, to quote Felipe Gonzalez later and affirm that “there can be no pardon or preventive denial of a pardon before a final judgment.” (April 23, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
