Spain’s monarchs embark on historic state trip to Cuba

Madrid / The King and Queen of Spain will embark on a state trip to Cuba Monday, the first of its kind and to coincide with celebrations to mark Havana’s 500th anniversary.

Felipe VI and Letizia will not join official events until Tuesday when they will be received by Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel.

The full agenda of the Spanish royal visit includes come 20 institutional, economic and cultural events.

As well as visiting Havana, the monarchs will take a trip to Santiago de Cuba where, on the last day of the trip on 14 November, they will pay tribute to the Spanish soldiers who died in two of battles in the war against the United States which marked the end of Spain’s colonial empire.

Diplomatic sources believe that this visit will amend an anomaly in bilateral relations and that normalization of these will be achieved.

The sources have rejected the objection of parties such as the conservative Popular Party, Citizens (centre right) and Vox (extreme right), who have criticized the Government for forcing the monarchs to make this trip now.

But diplomatic sources have said that the reason for the visit was first and foremost to take part in the commemoration of the fifth centenary of the Cuban capital.

The Spanish Government has denied that the trip is a show of support for the Cuban regime.

“The trip is not a manifestation of support for anything, but a normalization of relations with a member of the Latin American community,” the sources said.

The king is not expected to hold a meeting with dissidents of the Cuban regime but will join representatives of civil society such as intellectuals and independent journalists to hear their views on how the country is fairing.

Felipe VI and Letizia will be joined by Minister of Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell. (November 11, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
