SPANISH OCULISTS FOR ALBINO CHILDREN IN TANZANIA

Nairobi / The children from the centre for albinos in Kabanga had never gone to the oculist. In fact, Spanish specialists have been who have come to them to help them: now, the albino children from Kabanga, in the northwest of Tanzania, will have adapted glasses for their visual problems. Tanzania is the country with the highest concentration of albinos, something that is due, according to some theories, to bigamy.

Ruta de la Luz Foundation, promoted by the optics group Cione, has taken three opticians-optometrists from Spain, Arturo Casas, Marisa Galdón and Beatriz Jiménez, for ten days to this town in north-western Tanzania, near the border with Burundi, have helped 107 children with albinism who live in this shelter.

Eat an albino

In this East African country, albinos have always been victims of persecution due to traditional beliefs and persecution continues today: data recorded in 2015 show 76 reports of deaths of minors and albino adults, while another 69 were victims of attacks and 19 of violations.

The African albinos, who were already facing a very complicated situation with a life expectancy of between 25 and 30 years, saw in 2006 how the Tanzanian sorcerers expanded the belief that eating an albino can bring luck.

Since then, murders, mutilations and kidnappings have been recorded to extract parts of their bodies to make potions. Therefore, the Government decided to create protection centres to defend and try to cover the basic needs of children with albinism.

Prescription glasses for albinos

The problems arising from this genetic condition not only include the persecution and threats, but also include some related to eye health: a lower visual acuity, strabismus, decontrol of the eye muscles or photophobia are some conditions that suffer usually the albinos.

The experts sent by the Foundation discovered different pathologies that affected the children from the center, as well as other avoidable diseases such as conjunctivitis -common in areas of poor hygiene, a lot of dust and high exposure-, so they were offered training on care and the washing of the eyes.

Ruta de la Luz Foundation ensures that it will ensure that each of these children has their prescription glasses and adapted to their needs free of charge.

“This project has meant a before and after for these children and their development. Guarantee access to adequate visual health will make them have the possibility to go outside to play as we will provide special filters in each glass to read, study and carve out, maybe, a better future, “celebrates Casas in a statement from the Foundation.

The multinational specialized in lenses Carl Zeiss Vision, which collaborates with the project, provided special magnifying glasses so that children can follow the classes normally and will donate all the necessary lenses for these young people, with special filters for each case.

The attention of the three experts has not been limited only to children with albinism: in the ten days that have been in the area have practiced 443 visual exams to all children in the center and nearby schools, as well as their caregivers and teachers.

In the center of Kabanga, another 170 children with physical, mental disabilities and visual and auditory deficiencies coexist with the albinos, to whom the Government guarantees security, accommodation, maintenance and public schooling. (February 14, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
