Washington /The state funeral in memory of the former president of the United States George H. W. Bush (1989-1993) began at the National Cathedral in Washington with the presence of the current president of the country, Donald Trump and the four former living leaders of the country.
The funeral service began at 11:00 local time (16:00 GMT) with the assistance, among others, of the Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, King Abdullah II of Jordan, the former President of Mexico Carlos Salinas (1988-1994) and Prince Charles of England.
Trump and his wife, Melania, sat in the front row of the temple next to the Democratic presidents Barack Obama (2009-2017), Bill Clinton (1993-2001) and Jimmy Carter (1977-1981), who attend Mass together to their respective wives, Michelle, Hillary and Rosalynn.
Donald Trump and his predecessor Barack Obama shook hands and this greeting is the first known between the two since the transfer of power on January 20, 2017.
Obama and his wife Michelle warmly greeted Trump and the first lady when they both arrived and took their seats.
Former Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton was sitting further away, to the left of her husband Bill, who in turn occupied the space next to Michelle Obama.
Neither the former secretary of state nor her husband turned around when Trump and his wife took their seats, and there was no greeting between the two couples.
The coffin with the mortal remains of the former president of the United States, George H. W. Bush (1989-1993), left the US Capitol, where thousands of people came to see him in a burning chapel, and moved to the National Cathedral in Washington for his state funeral.
A dozen soldiers transported the coffin, covered with the American flag, from the steps of the Congress in Washington to the funeral vehicle that had to transport it to the Cathedral, half an hour before the beginning of the religious service.
Former President George W. Bush (2001-2009), the deceased president’s eldest son, witnessed the transfer of the coffin with his wife, Laura Bush, with his hand on his chest.
At the end of the funeral, the ex-president’s coffin will be moved to Texas again, to receive a final farewell from his family on Thursday.
The remains of George H. Bush will rest, finally, together with “the love of his life,” as he always defined his wife Barbara Bush, in the Bush Library located in the town of College Station (Texas), 160 kilometres from Houston. (December 5, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
