STRIKE OF SPANISH TAXISTS AGAINST UBER AND CABIFY

The day of protest called by the collective of taxi drivers against the competition of platforms such as Uber or Cabify has depopulated taxi ranks of vehicles in the major Spanish cities, especially in airports and train stations.

Thousands of taxi drivers, between 10,000 and 6,000, according to different sources, have demonstrated in Madrid against what they call “unfair competition.”

Until after 18.00 hours, taxis will not return to the terminals T-1 and T-2 of Adolfo Suárez Airport in Madrid-Barajas, while in Barcelona they will not do so until Wednesday because the strike is 24 hours.

Passengers that land at the Barcelona-El Prat Airport have been forced to look for an alternative means of transport, which has resulted in long queues to buy metro tickets and also to take the Aerobus.

The strikes have also affected the rest of Spanish cities.

The president of the Confederation of Autonomous Taxi Drivers of Spain, Julio Sanz, told EFE that the way taken by the taxi sector against the competition of Uber or Cabify “has no return.”

The taxi sector brings together about 100,000 people in Spain.

Demonstrators have drawn up a decalogue of petitions they have tabled in parliament in favour of a Taxi Public Service.

Among these ten measures call for the implementation of a digital platform in line with those used by Uber or Cabify, but “public”.
