TENS OF SAUDI PRINCES AND POLITICIANS ARE ARRESTED IN A PURGE AGAINST CORRUPTION

Cairo / Saudi Arabia has carried out an unprecedented arrest campaign for tens of princes, politicians and big businessmen in a purge that, according to the kingdom’s authorities, is due to an operation against corruption.

The arrests were carried out by order of a committee created on Saturday night and which depends on Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman.

The list of detainees includes the Head of the National Guard, four ministers, the director of the Saudi television empire MBC, owner of Al Arabiya, or Prince Al Walid bin Talal, the richest man in the country.

Al Walid owns the investment fund Kingdom Holding Company (KHC) through which he owns assets in companies such as Twitter, Apple, Disney, Citibank and numerous luxury hotels.

As a first step, the Saudi government announced the freezing of the bank accounts of all those investigated.

The wave of arrests comes shortly after the Saudi authorities imprisoned dozens of opponents last September in a campaign of repression denounced by international NGOs.

However, the Saudi government claims that the new arrests are strictly framed in this unprecedented campaign against corruption and are not about a political purge.
