The 5 keys about 5G

Madrid / The 5G is again main topic at Mobile World Congress (MWC) with commercial devices suitable for operating with the new networks, which are expected to be operational by 2019 in countries such as USA and South Korea.

But, what exactly is the 5G and what advances will it make in relation to the previous generation, the 4G? These are five keys to understanding what the future mobile network will be.

WHAT IS 5G?

The 5G is the fifth generation mobile network, understanding by generation each of the stages that mobile telephony has been experiencing since its appearance and each with its specific features:

We talked about 5G because first there was an analogue 1G which only allowed talking on the phone, a 2G that introduced SMS, a 3G that brought mobile internet and a 4G with which mobile broadband came, with use cases such as video in streaming or virtual reality on the mobile.

WHAT IMPROVES 4G?

First, it multiplies the speed of mobile communications to achieve peaks of 1 to 10 Gbps, more than optical fibre currently offers. And what is that for? Well, for example, to download a series in seconds in the mobile.

The second great improvement consists of a reduction of the response time of the network since an order is given to the device until it reacts. The improvements of the 4G network have reduced that time to 30 milliseconds, but the 5G will take it to the environment of 1 to 5 milliseconds, practically to the real time. This improvement is key in cases of use such as autonomous driving or surgical operations carried out remotely.

And, thirdly, it will allow having more devices connected, “up to one million per square kilometre or 100 per square meter,” according to the director of Accenture Digital for Spain, Portugal and Israel, José Luis Sancho. A capacity that will make a reality in that world in which any object is connected, from the washing machine or the refrigerator to industrial robots or autonomous cars.

WHICH ARE THE REGIONS THAT WILL HAVE THIS MOBILE TECHNOLOGY BEFORE? AND LATER?

According to the employers of mobile operators, the 5G will be a reality this year in 21 markets, including USA, Australia and China, where the new network will serve to bring broadband to households that do not have fiber . Two other advantaged countries are Japan and South Korea, where 4G is unable to respond to the intensive use of data in those countries.

By 2025, 59% of total mobile lines in Korea will be 5G, while in Japan that percentage will be 48%, of 49% in the US. and 29% in Europe.

In 2025, 5G connections in sub-Saharan Africa will only be 2.6% of the total, in Latin America and the Caribbean they will be 8%; in North Africa and the Middle East, 6%, and 3%, in West Africa.

HOW MUCH WILL THE NEW NETWORK COST?

Only in Europe the deployment of 5G by mobile operators will be between 300,000 and 500,000 million euros until 2025, according to the GSMA.

WHAT OPERATORS ARE BEING MOST ACTIVE IN THE 5G CAREER?

AT & T and Verizon, in USA; China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom, in China; KDDI, SoftBank and NTT DoCoMo, in Japan, and KT and SK Telecom, in Korea, are some of the most active operators in the race towards 5G.

In Spain, all network operators have spectrum for the 5G network and are carrying pilots. Telefónica, for example, has launched its technology cities project in Segovia and Talavera de la Reina to test the capabilities of the network in different use cases.

Vodafone expects to complete the first quarter of 2019 with more than 85 5G antennas deployed in a real network in six cities in Spain (Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Valencia, Bilbao and Malaga). (February 26, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
