Franco-German artist Kader Attia today won the 6th Joan Miró International Prize, which is jointly convened every two years by the Miró Foundation and the “la Caixa” Obra Social, provided with 70,000 euros, and it is considered one of the most important artistic awards in the world.
Kader Attia (1970, France) grew both in Algeria and in the suburbs of Paris. On his website, he writes that he uses that experience to develop a dynamic practice that reflects the aesthetics and ethics of different cultures.
His artistic exploration centers on the concept of reparation, as a constant in human nature, of which the modern Western mind and traditional extra-Western thought have always had an opposite view, he says.
He has exhibited at the 57th Venice Biennale, the Museum Für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt, the Musée Cantonal des Beaux Arts in Lausanne, the Middelheim Museum in Antwerp, MOMA in New York and the Tate Modern in London, among many others.
In addition to the monetary award, the prize includes the production of a monographic exhibition of the winner, which will be exhibited in 2018 at the Miró Foundation.
Jury of the award is formed by Iwona Blazwick, director from Whitechapel Gallery (London), Magnus Petersens, director from Bonniers Konsthall (Stockholm), Alfred Pacquement, former director from Museum of Modern Art-Georges Pompidou Center; Nimfa Bisbe, director from “la Caixa” Banking Foundation Art Collections and Rosa María Malet, director from Miró Foundation.Mo
The award, which in previous editions distinguished Olafur Eliasson, Pipilotti Rist, Mona Hatoum, Roni Horn and Ignasi Aballí (2015), was created ten years ago as a platform of recognition for artists who were at approximately the equator of their career and for which the prize can serve as a stimulus to open new paths and to risk in their artistic trajectories.
