Mexico / The World Summit of Leaders against Cancer concludes in Mexico City warning of the inequalities between rich and poor countries in combating cancer, a disease that kills 8.8 million people per year.
The president of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto, was the first to alert this gap and stressed that “about 70% of deaths” from cancer occur in low and middle income countries due to the “lack of access to treatment”.
“Cancer is, therefore, one of the conditions that reflects the economic inequality that affects the world”, the Mexican president said.
He was seconded by the president of Uruguay, Tabaré Vázquez, who urged detection in countries that he described as “oncologically underdeveloped.”
At the same time, the World Health Organization (WHO), which requested more resources and medical specialization for governments and their own institution.
These issues under discussion – inequality, the political agenda, prevention and information – were also presented by Queen Letizia. The also honorary president of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) highlighted “the importance of the attitude” when it comes to overcoming the disease and insisted on the importance of public managers committing themselves to fight cancer based on three pillars: research, prevention and information.
