The Baths, Mannequins and Gladiators of Giorgio De Chirico

Mannequins, gladiators, Italian squares and mysterious baths: Oil paintings, drawings, lithographs and sculptures are part of the 142-work anthology of Girogio De Chirico in Spain. The works of the “father of metaphysic painting” will be displayed in the CaixaForum of Barcelona until October to be sent to Madrid, Zaragoza and Palma de Mallorca afterwards.

“Giorgio De Chirico’s World: Dream or Reality” is an exhibition of the Italian master (Volos 1888 – Rome 1978) in which are shown some terracotta sculptures made since 1940 and some bronze ones made between 1968 and 1970.

The organizer Mariastella Margozzi and Katherine Robinson present a chronological exhibition – divided in six areas – of one of the key artists in the 20th century as a visual model and the forefather of Surrealism.

In 1910 De Chirico painted in Florence what is considered as his first metaphysical painting, “The Enigma of an Autumn Afternoon”, inspired by a vision in Santa Cruz square.

The exhibition in Barcelona also includes “Portrait of senora Gartzen” (1913), “Piazza d’Italia” (1968), “The Seer” (1973) and “Metaphysical vision of New York” (1975).

This show starts with a collection of portraits and self-portraits related to identity. Following that is the part of “metaphysical indoors spaces” where it can be found his works during his stay in Ferrara. There he completed the military service and discovered the Renaissance architecture placed next to an industrial city.

“Piazza d’Italia and mannequins” is one of the most famous themes of the metaphysical art. In this part, there are included the oil paintings that he started in Paris. They are focus on Italian squares which are “empty and eternal” and ornamented with figures of long shades.

The mannequin figure is made of an ovoid and smooth head, a body built out of geometrical elements and sketches held by a structure of boards.

The “Mysterious Baths” includes some works from 1934, such as ten lithographs created for Jean Cocteau’s book “Mythologie”. Also, there can been seen the oil paintings in which water appears as “lines connected in zig-zag”.

This tour ends with “History and Nature” and “The Classic World and Gladiators” where it is noticed De Chirico’s journey through Classicism, Renaissance and Baroque, as well as his tension between “reality, fiction and theatre”.

In 1978 De Chirico passed away at the age of 90. He was drawing until his last days, even in the hospital bed, giving away some of those painting to the workers in the hospital.
