Beijing / The coronavirus claimed another 254 lives in China on Wednesday, a day in which 15,152 new cases were confirmed after the health authorities in Hubei, the province where the outbreak occurred, changed the criteria for accounting for those infected.
According to data published today by the National Health Commission, the total number of deaths due to COVID-19 – new official name of the disease – rises to 1,367, while the number of infections tested is 59,805.
Change of classification system
The change in the case classification system in the central-eastern region of Hubei meant that during the day yesterday 242 deaths and 14,480 new infections were added to the balance sheet.
This represents, with great difference, the highest number of deaths recorded in a single day in that province, whose daily record of deaths had been reached on February 10 with 103, although the official press tries to calm the spirits ensuring that everything is It owes to the new criteria.
The authorities of that province explained that “those patients who have been clinically diagnosed” will now be included in the calculations. Until now, the cases were confirmed by means of tests carried out with equipment that was scarce in the province, and the new criterion will give more powers to the doctors to be able to diagnose the infections.
Although many more details about these new guides have not been made public, the representatives of the provincial Executive in charge of health affairs assured that they will “allow patients to receive timely treatment.”
Last week, Hubei health authorities had said they would begin to recognize the results of CT scans to confirm infections, which would allow hospitals to isolate patients more quickly.
The situation in China for the coronavirus
The National Health Commission reported today that, until last midnight local time (16.00 GMT on Wednesday), 8,030 serious cases had been recorded throughout the country, while 5,911 people have been discharged after overcoming the disease.
According to official data, more than 471,000 people who have been in close contact with those infected have been followed, of which 38% are still under observation.
To date, all but two deaths – in the Philippines and Hong Kong – have occurred in mainland China and, although some thirty countries have diagnosed cases of pneumonia in Wuhan, China accounts for about 99% of those infected.
The symptoms of the new coronavirus are in many cases similar to those of a cold, but may be accompanied by fever and fatigue, dry cough and dyspnea (shortness of breath).
