The change of feed in humanity

Madrid / Human health, agriculture, political science and environmental sustainability have all joined hands to mark the way which will lead humanity to reach 2050 with a radical transformation of the food system of 10 billion people.

The proposal of 37 scientists from the EAT Foundation advocates the change to healthy, tasty and sustainable diets, to realign the priorities of the food system for people and the planet, to produce more food in a more efficient way to safeguard the oceans and land and radically reduce food losses and waste.

DIETS WITH DOUBLE FRUIT AND VEGETABLE AND HALF OF RED MEAT AND SUGAR

The professor of Harvard, Walter Willett, one of the people in charge of the project indicates “the world-wide consumption of fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes will have to duplicate, and the consumption of foods like the red meat and the sugar will have to reduce in more than 50%”.

Willett, from the School of Public Health T.H. Chan from Harvard University, and his colleague Johan Rockström, from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Change Research and the Stockholm Resilience Center, have led the work that has incorporated elements such as the impact of diet on mortality.

The EAT-Lancet Commission has had 19 Commissioners and 18 co-authors from 16 countries.

11 MILLION LESS DEATHS PER YEAR

These experts believe changes in current diets will probably generate important health benefits and will prevent 11 million deaths per year, 19% and 24% of total deaths in adults.

Adjusted to the Paris Agreement on climate change, the commissioners assume that global agriculture will make the transition to sustainable food production, which will lead to a change in land use, which will go from being a net source of carbon to become in a net carbon sink.

According to Rockström, currently “global food production threatens climate stability and ecosystem resilience”. (January 21, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
