The chavismo against a dozen deputies

Caracas / The Chavismo in Venezuela has decided to act against a dozen deputies who are linked to the failed military uprising that led a week ago the opposition leader, Juan Guaidó, recognized as interim president of the country by more than 50 governments: he agrees to withdraw them parliamentary immunity and accuses them of ‘betrayal of the fatherland’.

The National Constituent Assembly (ANC), composed only of pro-government officials and not recognized by many countries, lifted the immunity of seven legislators opposed to the Government of Nicolás Maduro, attributing exclusive powers to Parliament and in response to a request from the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ).

The head of the ANC, Diosdado Cabello, announced that they have identified three other deputies, without saying their names, who also participated in the uprising and, therefore, hope to withdraw their immunity in the coming days.

The indicated are Andrade, Allup, Blanco, Florido, Grazia, Magallanes and Calzadilla

The decision of the ANC falls on the first vice president of the National Assembly (AN, Parliament), Edgar Zambrano; as well as former president of the Legislature, Henry Ramos Allup.

The other legislators affected are Richard Blanco, from the Alianza Bravo Pueblo (ABP) formation; Luis Florido, independent; Américo de Grazia and Mariela Magallanes de La Causa R; and Simón Calzadilla, of the Progressive Movement (MPV).

Those named are considered participants “flagrantly” in “a coup on April 30,” said Cabello in reference to the ephemeral uprising last Tuesday that had the support of a group of soldiers and gave way to two days of anti-government protests that resulted in five deaths and 233 detainees.

They are accused of “treason to the Fatherland” and other crimes without immunity

The TSJ ruled that those involved incurred in “treason, conspiracy, instigation to insurrection, civil rebellion, conspiracy to commit a crime, usurpation of functions, public incitement to the disobedience of the laws and continued hatred.”

“Because it is a flagrant commission of common crimes (…) there is no precedent of merit (process for the withdrawal of immunity) of the aforementioned citizens, for which reason their prosecution corresponds to the ordinary courts in criminal matters” , continues the letter that was ratified by applause by the members of the ANC.

The Parliament ‘ignores’ the decisions of the Public Power and the Supreme

The parliament, of forceful opposition majority, agreed on Tuesday “to ignore any acts of the organs of the Public Power that pretend to violate the parliamentary immunity of the deputies of the National Assembly”.

During a debate to which the journalists could not accede due to the refusal of the Bolivarian National Guard, the deputies also ratified “the ignorance of this National Assembly to the decisions of a Supreme Court of Justice that does not have any legitimacy or jurisdiction,” they said.

Also on this day, Guaidó held a meeting with several European ambassadors to talk about the international contact group created by the EU that seeks solutions to the crisis in the Caribbean country. (May 8, 2019, EFE / PracticaEspañol)
