THE COMPANIES THAT LEAVE THEIR CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS IN CATALONIA

A day before the Catalan president, Carles Puigdemont, appears before the Catalan Parliament to unveil if he declares independence unilaterally, companies from all productive sectors have announced that leave their corporate headquarters in Catalonia, as did Banco Sabadell, CaixaBank and Gas Natural.

Thus, the presence of Catalan companies in the Ibex 35, which until a few days ago had seven companies with their headquarters in Catalonia, has been reduced to the minimum expression, except for Grifols, after Abertis, Colonial and Cellnex have decided to move their corporate headquarters to Madrid because of the political situation in Catalonia.

Only on Monday, more than a dozen companies from sectors as diverse as the financial, insurer or food have reported that the corporate headquarters are taken outside of Catalonia.

The multinational of blood products Grifols is by now the only company in the Ibex 35 that maintains its registered address in Catalonia, but does not rule out transferring it if the political scenario ends up affecting its business or its financial situation.

The board of directors of the motorway concessionaire Abertis unanimously adopted the change of its headquarters to Madrid “as long as this situation is maintained”.

The company, on which Italian Atlantia has launched a takeover bid, has explained that it adopts this decision “to maintain the normal operation of the company and in order to protect the overall interests of the company “.

And after Abertis, the property developer Colonial and the telecommunications infrastructure operator Cellnex, the insurance companies SegurCaixa and MGS Seguros, the paper company Torraspapel, the transport group MRW, the San Miguel brewer or the dental products firm DVD Dental.

The securities company GVC Gaesco, owned by the Vallbé family, linked to Òmnium Cultural, has also decided to move its corporate headquarters to its offices in the Spanish capital and many others are waiting to give way to a possible unilateral declaration of independence in the Parliament.

This is the case of Idilia Foods, the company that owns brands like Cola Cao and Nocilla, and the publishing group Planeta.

In the current context of uncertainty and ‘leakage’ of corporate headquarters, Foment del Treball has warned that it sees a risk of “economic insolvency” in Catalonia if it takes “a step further in the uncertain path” towards the unilateral declaration of independence.
