Or “Borges esencial”. With this title, the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), the Association of Academies of the Spanish Language (Asale) and the publishing house Alfaguara have put on sale in Spain a commemorative edition of the 30th anniversary of the death of the most universal of Argentine authors, which will be Latin America between the end of August and the beginning of September.
The edition, prepared by Jose Luis Moure, president of the Argentine Academy of Letters, includes unabridged two of the fundamental works of Borges, “Ficciones” and “El Aleph”, to which has been added a significant selection of essays and poetry, together with unpublished images of some manuscripts of the Argentine author and complementary studies of several experts in his work.
The title of the work may perhaps be a redundancy, “because Borges in himself is the essence,” said the director of the RAE and president of the Asale, Dario Villanueva, in the presentation of the book at the National Library.
A volume that is the ninth of the collection created in 2004 when the RAE and ASALE began a project of editing great works of literature in Spanish, to reach a public “as wide as possible.”
The year will be closed, said Villanueva, with the publication of the tenth work of this collection, “Yo el Supremo”, by the Paraguayan Roa Bastos.
Borges (Buenos Aires, 1899 – Geneva, 1986) is considered as “the great classic contemporary author” and in his enormous work abolished all literary genres, according to the director of the Alfaguara publishing house, Pilar Reyes.
“Whoever reads it will get a pretty accurate idea of this prodigy of writer who was inscribed in the universal tradition.”
For Jose Maria Merino, a writer and member from the RAE, in the selected works one can find the “mysterious” relationship between fiction and reality, the theme of “double” that always interested Borges, the dream as a revelation of successive realities , time and its innumerable perspectives, and the enigmatic and the secret as a labyrinth.
Borges, according to professor Teodosio Fernandez, author of one of the complementary studies included in the book, is an author “much more quoted than read”, to which “anyone can approach” and a “fun” author.
And, according to the secretary general of the Asale, the Venezuelan Francisco Javier Pérez, Borges adds “to the cycle of the great patriarchs of literature in Spanish.”
