THE EXPLOSION OF THE VOLCANO OF FIRE OF GUATEMALA

Guatemala/ The Volcano of Fire of Guatemala, which on 3 June had an eruption that caused at least 165 deaths, today recorded a “strong” explosion accompained by avalanches “all around the crater”.

The National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology indicated in a special official bulletin that the volcano experienced this activity, the first strong in the last six weeks, at 21.20 local time (3.30 GMT on Thursday)

Moreover, it presents rumbles, shock waves and expels “abundant incandescent material” at 4,800 meters of height, which also raises a column of ash that moves to 12 kilometers in westerly direction and that can cause the fall of fine particles in villages such as San Pedro or Yecocapa.

“This explosion is the first strong recorded in the last sex weeks and it can be the start of another stage of activity“, the scientific body warned.

For his part, the spokesperson of the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction, David de León, explained that due to this situation it is possible to “hear rumbles” and added that they mantain vigilance in the surroundings communities.

The cone, 3,763 meters of height, is located about 50 kilometers west of the Guatemalan capital, between the departments of Escuintla (south), Chinaltenango and Sacatepéquez (west).

The last eruption of the Volcano of Fire, one of the strongest in history, caused 165 deaths, 260 missing and almost two million affected, some of whom lost everything.  (August 9, 2018, EFE/PracticaEspañol)
